National Road Yardsale Cookbook

I’m now in the process of collecting recipes from individuals, restaurants, bed and breakfasts from ANYONE along the National Road (Route 40) for the third volume of the Historic National Road Cookbook. I’m ESPECIALLY looking for recipes from restaurants which are no longer in business. Comments from readers who’ve read the first two volumes have indicated that this is an area of particular interest. If you have any recipes which are historic, ethnic or use local products from your region, please include these as well.

Zanesville, Ohio Motel – Family Owned

Muskingum County offers only one independent motel that competes with all of the chain properties for business travelers, visiting family, parents visiting college students and travelers alike and at Baker’s Motel you will receive the family atmosphere the you just cannot find at the chain properties.  This American owned independent has been under the same ownership now for over 30 years by Gary and Teresa Golden. 

Now that the kids have all moved north,  Gary and Teresa have focused their efforts on updating their Zanesville, Ohio motel and over the last few years and have completed many projects that enable this historical independent motel to compete with the chains,  where many chain offer guests wireless internet access, usually only available in the lobbies, Baker’s Motel has wireless available in all rooms so guests can enjoy this feature from the comfort of their rooms and it is high speed not the traditional slow speed that most offer.

Additionally this independent property offers some of the largest rooms that you will be able to find, probably anywhere in Ohio.  Mr. Golden stated that over the last couple years they have added new heater air units, beautiful Berber carpet plus much more to their family rooms which offer two or 3 beds.  This family owned independent is located just four miles west from Muskingum University on the Historical National Road.

The budget conscious will also be happy at Baker’s Motel as the rooms with one bed are also very nice offering queen size bed and bathrooms with beautiful tile that you will not find anywhere else, the internet was accessible from every room that I was shown. 

Now you will not get a continental breakfast at this Zanesville, Ohio motel but you will save enough money to buy you a full breakfast at one of the local restaurants though they do offer free coffee in the mornings.  Additionally if you are just looking for a clean comfortable room then this is the place to stay with rooms starting a just $39.99 you can’t beat it.

Additionally this Zanesville, Ohio motel has a nice website online where you can view the rooms they offer and what the area has to offer, I noticed that the nice website can be found online quite easily and you can also book your room through the website.

Should you be traveling through or working in the area stay at Baker’s Motel in Norwich, Ohio located between Cambridge and Zanesville at Exit 164 off I-70.

Of course everyone knows that I-70 parallels US 40 which is the Historic National Road but few know how Exit 164 actually came to be here as an exit. Back in the late 1950’s when the interstate was being planned there actually was not going to be an exit here when I.B Baker, then the owner of Baker’s Motel also owned all of the land surrounding the motel told the State of Ohio that if they put an exit here he would in turn give them the land for the now Zane Grey Museum. Of course the rest is history and we have Exit 164. This exit has seen many businesses come and go over the years though Baker’s Motel, BP Service Station, Ohio Pottery, Zanesville Pottery and Lumi-Lite Candle company are the staples at this exit along with the Zane Grey Museum. Over the last several years we have seen many newer businesses pop up which are becoming good traffic generators.

What is Norwich, Ohio know for? Our claim to fame is the home of the first traffic fatality on the national road.

Baker’s Motel – Opened it’s doors in 1937, the original section being the now Court Yard rooms then in 1953 the wings were added which include 1 -10 and 31 – 42 then in 1963 the back section was built . The motel sits on 7 acres of beautifully manicured land.

Zanesville Pottery – Started in 1947 as a small outlet store and the current family has operated the business since 1953.

Lumi-Lite Candle Company – Started in business in 1958 and the first owner was William Wilson, based in downtown Norwich, Ohio.

Ohio Pottery – Just off Exit 164 was started in 1957 by William Waltz and today the third generation still operates the business.
